Since its conception, Silaban was an active founder and member of IAI. He participated in most periodic meetings and conferences of the organization. One notable contribution was his paper: Idealisme Arsitektur dan Kenyataannya di Indonesia, presented at a conference in Yogyakarta in 1982. In his paper, Silaban carefully outlines his long-standing experience as a practicing architect in dealing with a tropical climate (Silaban 1984, 75–89).
